Panagia Ekatontapyliani

August 15 @ 8:00 pm

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated every year in the impressive church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani in Paros, which is one of the oldest and best preserved Christian churches. According to tradition, the original building of this church was the work of the Byzantine Emperor Mega / Agios Konstantinos to fulfill the wish of his mother, Agia Eleni, around the 4th century. It is said that the name Ekatontapyliani, originates from the 99 gates (doors) that are visible while, according to tradition, the 100th will be revealed with the opening of a corresponding secret door located in Hagia Sophia.

The celebration for the faithful begins with services on August 13 and culminates on August 15 where the procession of the icon of the Virgin Mary and its procession to the traditional settlement of Parikia takes place. Festive events follow and a big festival that lasts until the early morning hours of the next day.

The same night the port comes alive even more as the fishing boats go out in the bay of Parikia and throw fireworks that illuminate the sky and “light up” the fun. In combination with the island melodies heard by the local organ players and the dance groups that give the rhythm to the coastal road of Parikia starting with a Balo, the big party is late to end… Like the Parian wine with the mezes served!
