Pirate Festival

August 23 @ 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm | Free

With the festival of the Pirates on the 23rd of August, the people of Paria make a journey through time, representing a historical moment of the island. In 1537 the legendary pirate Barbarossa and his men invaded Naoussa and among other things stole the women of the island. The locals fought with them to get them back.

The custom of representing the pirate raid began in 1965 by a group of people from Naoussa, while in 1985 it was transported to the big port due to the large number of visitors. For the revival of the custom, the volunteer group “Koursaroi” undertakes the organization. They disguise themselves as pirates and pass by boats on the opposite side of the bay of Naoussa. They represent the raid of the corsairs in the alleys of the village, while the locals take action and counter-attack. Of course they manage to “defeat” and take their wives from the hands of pirates.

The port and the alleys of Naoussa are filled with people from the surrounding villages but also tourists who gather to watch the spectacle and dance ball and sirto enjoying the island live music. The celebration includes other cultural events such as exhibitions, concerts, guided tours and theatrical performances depending on the program of each year.
