Every August 15 in Patmos, the northernmost island of the Dodecanese, on the day of the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the festival of Panagia tou Geranou takes place. At the top of the homonymous hill you will see the chapel. It dates back to around 1880, it was built on two older churches with a common poron, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Agia Iouliani, icons of which it houses to this day. In the past, because access to the site was difficult, whenever an operation had to be performed, the islanders carried the image and approached the site by fishing boat from the Konsolato area. The view from the spot is impressive. You can see the entrance of Patmos, the town with the Monastery and the surrounding islands, such as Kiliomodi, Leros, Lipsi, Arkioi and Marathi. On the occasion of the celebration, The church is flagged and one of the largest traditional island festivals is organized in its precinct. During the evening and after, the church is full of people for the feast and the big feast. The local delicacies of the island make their appearance and the live music by local organ players gives the rhythm for a long festival with fun and dancing.
