On the 17 th of September in Donousa,the festival of Aghia Sophia takes place in the region of Mersini.The picturesque village is 6.5 km from the port, is built on a slope and has
unrestricted view of the Aegean. After the church service, the locals organize a Cycladic
festival full of fun, food and sweet xerotigana (a thin layer of fyllo dough fried in olive
oil,then drizzled with honey and seasoned with cinnamon,clove and sesame). At the festival
of Aghia Sofia, as soon as the island violin is heard, the big party begins under the plane tree, overlooking Amorgos!
