The Wine Festival
Event Navigation
Kythera,is the southernmost point of the Ionian Islands located at the entrance of the Laconic Gulf.
Famous for the production of the unique variety of apple-peach known as “ the breasts of Aphrodite” is the beautiful village Mitata. Every year, on the second Saturday of August, a big festival is organised with a tradition from 1982; the Wine Festival offering free local wine of many varieties and a big party with live music and traditional local dances such as Bourdaris, Agios Giorgis, Messaritikos, Papadopanagiotaina and Karavitikos. The celebration takes place in the back square of Mitata but have in mind that it is worth visiting the village early enough to explore it. It has a beautiful view of a ravine, the gorge of Tsakonas which has dense vegetation and is accessible for walkers. You will find watermills, many springs suitable for picnics, small lakes and a small post-Byzantine church.
