On the eve of the Assumption of the Virgin,on the 14 th of August a great festival is held in
Anogi, a village at an altitude of 550 meters on the highest mountain on the island,Niritos.On
your way to the village you will enjoy a breath-taking view of the surroundings and as you
arrive you will have the chance to admire the Byzantine church “Assumption of Virgin” which
is one of the largest,most important and most ancient temples of the Balkans.It was built
about 700 years ago and the interior is painted with frescoes of Byzantine style.The festival
of Ithaca takes place in this historical monument,with the locals offering plenty of wine ,
food and live music that can create for every attendee a truly unique atmosphere to enjoy!
