The festival of Panagia Flevariotissa
Event Navigation
On the 2 nd of February,on the feast of the Assumption of Christ, the festival of the monastery of Panagia Flevariotissa or Agia Libya takes place on the island, a winter meeting point of the locals with traditional dances, food and plenty of wine. The monastery is built in a pit on the slope. Part of the church is located inside a cave, built with Byzantine style architecture with a characteristic wood-carved iconostasis.
On its north wall, there is a chapel inside a small cave, where before the temple was built,
according to tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary was found by a shepherd who used the
cave for his animals. One night he found in a hollow of the rock the image of the Virgin Mary
with a lighted candle. In one of the many variations of the myth, it is said that the shepherd
was surprised and transported the image to Chora, two hours away from the spot, to show it
to his fellow villagers. The next day he went back to his animals, he saw the same icon in the
same place, although he had left it in Chora. Believing that the Virgin Mary miraculously
returned alone, she decided to cover her with a sack or cloth so that she could not see the
road… The next day the image of the Virgin Mary was found in the same place, which led to
the decision to build the church on this site. Then, on the north side, three small cells were
built that were used to accommodate those who spent the night for the festival and an
additional functional space for the preparations of the festival. After the service, traditional
delicacies and plenty of wine are offered, accompanied by live music.
