The festival of Spiloula is one of the last autumn festivals of Zakynthos and stands out for its venue. The picturesque church of Spiloula in the village of Kalipado is built in a coastal rock, in a cave whose image of the Virgin Mary was found many years ago. From this event, based on local tradition, the name “Panagia i Spiloula” emerged. The main church of Panagia Spiloula belongs to a family on the island, however it is open to visitors on the day of the celebration. From there there are stairs that lead to the old chapel which is built into the rock. The point is impressive for another reason, for the view that allows the visitor to see almost the whole island. Also, the bay of Laganas, Kyllini and Kefalonia. So, Every September after the service follows an island feast with food mainly grilled meat, wine, Zakynthian sweets such as sprouts (based on semolina) and pasteli. Organ players and Ionian dance are not missing, completing another successful festival.
