Profitis Ilias Festival

July 19 @ 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm | Free

Sifnos has three churches in honor of the Prophet Elias. The biggest festival takes place in the monastery of Profitis Ilias of Apsilos. It is located at the highest point of the island (690 m.), Hence its name, and until 1890 it was inhabited by monks.

To reach the chapel you need 1.5-2 hours walk. During the ascent, in the last 500 meters there are stone stairs that may make it difficult for you but prepare you for the… festive entrance to the monastery! The panoramic view is unparalleled! Usually, the locals offer cookies and tsipouro as a first welcome and reward for the long climb. The stone-built white monastery and its courtyard are flagged for the celebration. On the eve of Prophet Elias, supper is sung and bread is offered. Then dinner is held in the large dining room that can accommodate almost 50 people who take turns to serve everyone. Chickpeas, braised goat with potatoes or spaghetti, other local delicacies and wine are served. A Cycladic feast with lute and violin follows.
