Panigyri of Panagia Tοso Nero

August 14 @ 2:00 pm - 11:30 pm | Free

The festival of Panagia Toso Nero, in Sifnos, takes place in the small church of the same name located in a remote area, which you can reach by walking enough or by boat starting from Kamares and leaving you at a distance of twenty minutes uphill path. It is located in a wonderful part of the island that gives you a generously beautiful view. The name probably comes from the coastal spring that leads you to a path that starts from the temple and ends at the beach where a natural trough collects the little water that runs from the rocks.

According to the tradition of the island, every year the host of the festival is the “festival”, Sifnios who has the honor to host the icon of the church in his house for a whole year and returns it on the day of the festival. The festival undertakes the care of the church and the expenses of the festival.

A large table is set and a party is set up until late in the beautiful courtyard of the church with lots of music and dancing. The menu usually includes chickpeas, olives, braised with spaghetti, cod and lots of wine offered in local clay jugs.

The next day, after the service, the next festival takes the sacred image to take home and keep it for a year.
