Panigyri of Ksylopanagia

August 15 @ 2:00 pm - 11:30 pm | Free

On August 15, in the village of Panagia in Serifos, the festival of Xylopanagia takes place. A name that has remained from an old custom that, although it has faded, is still celebrated by the locals with a big festival. The custom wanted the men of the village to “duel” holding oleander branches in order to win the most beautiful unmarried girl. The couple who would be the first to dance around the old olive tree in front of the church, would get married within the next year. The Byzantine church is the oldest on the island, dating to 950-1000 AD. with frescoes from the 14th and 17th centuries. Now, the Cycladic festival of Xylopanagia is the largest on the island, lasting three days full of food, wine, island music and lots of dancing.
