Agia Paraskevi Festival

The festival of Agia Paraskevi in ​​Kato Meria of Amorgos, is the largest festival than any other island festival in Greece that gathers many people every year, about 3,500 – 4,000 people attend the evening service on the eve of the 25th of July. The people of Amorgos begin to prepare for this day starting from Agia Marina celebration on the 17th of July, with a series of traditions that summarize the concept of sharing both raw materials for the food that will be offered on the day of the big celebration and the work to achieve it. The flour, often even the wheat for its preparation, the sesame and the anise for the bread, which according to the custom is kneaded on the 23rd and the 24th of July, are offered by the locals. Hundreds of loaves, called “heptazymas, are baked in a traditional wood. Also on the 23rd of July the preparation of the food start, which -again after the offer of the inhabitants who often reach 90 number working voluntarily day and night- as main ingredient have the meat (sheep, goats, beef and pork) and potatoes and are cooked in about 15 large cauldrons. On the 25th of July, the dishes are offered in clay plates in combination with lots of wine, violins and lutes, fun and dancing.
